As Aurélia Fighiera approached the stage at Waterford’s Old Town Hall Sunday, there were the obvious butterflies as she was about to perform during the folk open mic.  And who could blame her? Being on stage is a daunting enough, let alone for a 16-year-old Rotary exchange student from France,  singing on a public stage for the first time.

“I was nervous,” said Fighiera, who is on Rotary exchange with the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise. “It’s my first time singing in front of people. I sang at my cousins wedding, but nothing like this. I don’t know why I wanted to try it. My host parents came to support me. They were the ones that encouraged me to do it.”   The end result was a performance in French, with no musical accompaniment. It was a performance that delighted the crowd on hand and a moment she probably won’t forget.

And it’s an experience she wants to share with her new friends in Canada, so she’s hoping next time they will come along with her.   She will be back – with an accordionist – to perform Edith Piaf’s La Vie en Rose.  Aurielia's next  performance is Sun March 2 @2-4 in Waterford at Town Hall Open Mic Series.  Save the date!
