RECENT CLUB NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
On Tuesday morning, 26 Mar 2024, and on our collective behalves, Ken Carey welcomed Christopher Morgan as our Guest Speaker. At our hybrid (ie live attendance at R83 with zoom remote attendance) session, he spoke to us about HoverLink Ontario Incorporated; the initiative to use hovercraft to provide for mass-transit between Toronto and the Niagara Region.  Christopher, as a successful high-level entrprenuer with rather eclectic interests, provided a very interesting and entertaining glimpse into this project; highlighting the 'Win' (environmental), 'Win' (tourism), 'Win' (economic) characteristics associated with this novel solution to the movement of people and goods.
More information about Hoverlink may be found by clicking here.  Shown at the 'Read more ...' tab is a short note related to our speaker's background as well as a snap-shot of the HoverLink initiative.
After many questions, President John Wallace concluded with words of appreciation for a great briefing.
The Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise is thrilled to announce that they have been successful in receiving a US$77,000 = CA$103,000 grant for their project Prevention of Retinopathy in Premature Babies from Rotary International.  The project is part of the Club’s long affiliation with Operation Eyesight in India and will fund the purchase of a vehicle and the specialized equipment needed to diagnose and treat retinopathy in newborn babies.  The club has raised over CA$60,000 for Operation Eyesight over the last few years and the rest is provided by Rotary District and Rotary International funds.
Rotary project leader Jim Dawson commented that; "premature babies must be diagnosed and treated within two weeks of birth so the vehicle will allow specialists to travelling to four hospitals in the Moradabad, India area” (why India, you ask? our logic is at this link)
An article about a family in India that was able to benefit from this preventative work is given at this link. This same story is shown at the 'Read more ...' tab, in a pictorial story-board format.
BZ to the RCNS International Service Committee!
KidSport is a provincial charitable group which assists kids in our local communities. They provide grants to help cover the costs of registration fees so that kids aged 18 and under can play a season of sport.
Our local chapter accepts applications and administers grants of up to $250 per child/year, for 20 kids who live in Norfolk County. If you would like to know more about the Norfolk chapter of KidSport (or if you would like to add your own donation to their objectives), please click on this link for more information.
Shown here is a picture of Community Service Chair Scott Williams delivering our donation to Brent McKay of KidSport.  Brent (son of RCNS past-member Lucine) is a committee member of the Norfolk chapter and we thank him and all committee members for all they do for the kids in Norfolk County.
Recognizing the Rotary International focus of mental health and wellness, our Club has tried to inform itself concerning related issues and has further contributed to causes that are seen to be helpful.
Recently, the Community Service Committee has made a donation to one of the key mental health leaders in our area; CAMHS-Wellness & Recovery. With our donation, they have been able to purchase a new stove for their lunch program. As a result, each week The Wellness & Recovery Centre is able to host a free lunch from 12-1pm on Fridays for individuals in the community living with mental illness and/or addiction. The meals are hosted/served at their location at 50 Orchard Ave in Simcoe.
As an aside, CAMHS wants the public to know that in the event anyone; anyone at all, might benefit from this program; they are warmly invited to just drop-in.
In the photo, we see Community Service Chair Scott Williams delivering the donation to CAMHS Wellness & Recovery Centre Program Assistants, Trisha Schotsch & Trish Hyde.
As the RCNS has done over the years, we continue to support the Norfolk Community Help Centre in Langton. Here we see a photo of Jim Peters of our Community Service Committee delivering a cheque to Nancy Hildebrand at their training centre in Langton. The donation is to be used for emergency support for their members including transportation, emergency debt assistance and food-related inadequacies.
The Dragons are coming back in June ... and we in the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise are now seeking help from the community to make the 2024 event even more successful than was the case in 2023.
Last year, we raised $26,000, we supported the Cancer Support & Resource Program with a $6,500 donation and we made additional donations to 11 other local community charities. We hosted 23 teams (500 participants, including local community teams competitive teams from across Ontario) and we entertained 2,000 enthusiastic spectators many who shopped local while in Waterford for the day.
Given this exposure, we are seeking sponsors to help us. Your corporate sponsorship of $5,000 will ensure another successful fundraising event that benefits so many in Norfolk County. In addition, your business and your contribution will be advertised on the Invasion of the Dragons website and our Facebook page, on signage throughout the park at the event and by MC/DJ announcements throughout the event day.
Note the current event webpage at this link and the event poster at the 'Read more ...' tab below.

Recently, the RCNS offered our support to the Simcoe & District Humane Society with a view towards helping some of the rescues and local families this winter.  With the support we were able to provide, 90 animals will be spayed/neutered.

Following seven, successfully-concluded licences of our ever-popular Catch the Ace (CTA) fundraiser, the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise, with the support of the Port Dover Legion Branch 158,  plans to restart the contest on 02 February 2024; this to be our eighth licence - it will conclude once the Ace of Spade is finally drawn.
Once a licence is concluded, a summary of the results is generated. This summary information is then shared with the local print media and can also be found on this web-site - ie see our FUNdraiser Tab at the top of this website to see the results  from our seventh completed licence.
For those who follow the CTA game on a more regular basis, the best way to stay abreast of the current results is to visit our FaceBook site. You may find an image of our FB Page as a panel on this web-page or you may wish to visit our FB Page by clicking on this link. Alternatively, the results are also posted to our weekly RCNS Bulletin (the 'Sunriser'). Normally, it is released to our members and friends on a weekly basis. If you are not a subscriber and you might wish to join the mailing list, please see the 'RCNS Bulletin Subscribe' panel as given at this website.
'How are you?...REALLY'!?
In a recent webinar to the Rotary community, RI President Gordon McInally, expressed his lead perspective on the need to address mental health issues in our communities. As a result, it is not a surprise that our current-year, Rotary theme of "Create Hope in the World" has a clear focus on mental health issues. The webinar sought to provide early information on the proposed Rotary approach to this objective and may be accessed by clicking here.
An early initiative to advance this priority was to create a focal point at the RI level to co-ordinate information and/or action - the 'Mental Health Initiatives; Rotary Action Group'  was born. The work of this group can be found by clicking on this link - it is a trove of great ideas.
At our own District 7090 level, District Governor Scott Marcin has communicated his views on this topic; a summary of which may be found at this link.
Clearly, there is a lot of work to accomplish but if you're looking for a very simple thing to do, the next time you meet someone in need, try opening the conversation with; 'How are you? ... REALLY'.
