Chris Bender is a recipient of the Volvo Truck Driver of the Year in 2013, so he knows about driving safely. He’s also a Road Knight and travels Ontario in his time off to promote safe driving on behalf of the Ontario Trucking Association.  Drivers of large trucks and cars need to co-exist, because our economy relies on truck traffic both for both consumers and manufacturers to get their products delivered on time, representing over 75% of all goods transported.

Over two million people are employed in trucking in Ontario, but fewer than 3% of traffic accidents involve a transport truck. There are no small accidents when a large truck is involved, he said. Big trucks have BIG blind spots though, so stay visible – if you can’t see a truck’s side mirrors, then the truck driver can’t see you. Also, avoid tailgating or cutting too close in front of a truck.

Generally speaking, if we stay out of the way of the transport trucks, they likely won’t hit us!
