It was a SPOOKtacular day for Haley Wilson, G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp Coordinator, and Ali Huszczo, a member of the Camp.  An RCNS cheque was presented by Sue Finnie, Community Service Committee member of the RCNS.  The G.I.R.L.S. Power Camp is a three day camp program for girls in grade 8 from the Haldimand and Norfolk area. The program is co-ordinated by staff at the Haldimand and Norfolk Women’s Services and is facilitated by young community volunteers, ages 16 through 25 years.  The camp focus is to prepare the grade 8 students for high school by covering topics such as self esteem and confidence building, healthy relationships, healthy bodies and feminine hygiene, personal safety, coping with mental health, and connecting to community resources.  Campers and facilitators participate in a self-defence course, a high ropes course, yoga, and more! It is a weekend that enhances personal connections, empowerment, and girl power!  This year, the Camp will be offered 2-4 December at Camp Trillium in Waterford. The monetary donation from the RCNS will be  utilized for the high ropes activity, which has been a staple activity at power camp. The Camp operates annually by depending on donations, grants, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts.

Adventure Works operates the high ropes activity and this year has offered a new course, one that is fully accessible, safer, and provides more options for the girls to explore. This session encourages safe risk taking, team building, confidence and empowerment.  Wilson indicates, “it is a unique experience that is loads of fun for the girls!”  A trained team assists the campers getting into their harness and leads them to the high ropes course.  From there, the girls explore and play on various obstacles, while safely suspended in the air.
