The Mask She Wears
by Molly McGrail
The mask she wears is old
And Grey
And torn.
The seams are ripping
And the fabric is worn.
The corners are drooping in an ugly, cold frown
That does what they ask for
With tears trickling down.
And in the morning she sobs
She screams
They wait
Then she glues back together
The mask that she hates.
Beneath she is sparkling
With ribbons
And feathers
Ready to soar to unthinkable heights
If she could only escape from their tether.
Each little time she takes off their mask
Her feathers get stuck in the glue
Plucking them off till she’s not sure she can fly
Or even if she really wants to.
And in the morning she sobs
She screams
They wait
Then she glues back together
The mask that she hates.
No colour in her life of black
And endless dark shades of grey,
Except for all the glints of gold
That they put out on display.
They are so proud of their perfect daughter
Whose dreams hide away on a shelf
Who can grow up to be whatever she wants
As long as it isn’t herself.
And in the morning they sob
The silver
The blade
And they scream for their perfect daughter
Her perfect mask in its perfect place.
