One of the three ways that a Paul Harris Fellowship may be awarded is for the parent club to use its Foundation contribution points to nominate a particular member of its own club or the community at large. On 26 August 2025, at our Welcome Back BBQ, the RCNS took the opportunity to recognize a truly wonderful family team within our Norfolk community, two selfless people who have distinguished themselves in exactly the light that Paul Harris had envisaged.
As sponsored & introduced by our Public Image Chair Jim Simpson, we honoured Ian and Judy Ann Macaulay. After our supper and to their complete surprise (bordering on shock!), the award sponsor called the Macaulays to the front and provided an overview of their considerable contributions to their church, their club and to the community in general. By going to the 'Read more ...' tab, you can read the citations used to overview the contributions the Macaulays have made to their community(s). At the attached picture, we note the presentation with several Sunrisers in attendance including (l to r); Co-President Mary Mercato, Judy Ann & Ian, PI Chair Jim Simpson and Co-President Ross Gowan. Additional photos of the evening and the presentation can be found at this link.
As Rotarians, we are privileged to recognize selfless & generous community leaders such as Ian & Judy Ann. As Jim concluded in his remraks, the Macaulays are model, yet modest citizens that emulate every good value Rotary stands for and are more-than-worthy of Paul Harris Fellowship Awards for their "Service Above Self'. Congratulations to both!

Family Support

The Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise was most fortunate to have the full Macaulay family join in with the surprise PH presentation at the BBQ. Along with Ian and Judy Ann was daughter Laurie with her husband Brandon White and their children Sadie and Owen (from Kincardine) as well as daughter Krista with her husband Craig Thompson and their son Kris (from Simcoe).  All were present for the group photo taken after the ceremony.

Citation for Judy Ann Macaulay

     Judy Ann (along with her husband Ian) has lived an adult life committed to the service to others. Representative examples of their ‘service above self’ follows;

For 18+ years, they have been volunteers in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program as coordinated by the Canadian Revenue Agency. For over 10 years, they have been the leaders in the local group as hosted by the Norfolk County Library. In an average year, they will coordinate the program, organize the clinics, schedule, and train the volunteer tax preparers. Typically, the local program will do as many as 800 free tax returns in a year; over 18 years this is a huge feat fin support of the needy.

     They are both active in their church (St Paul’s) offering volunteer services such as committee membership, search groups, cooking for event meals, collecting the offerings etc. Both are also involved as volunteers with Church Out Serving, in the delivery of meals to those in need.

     For years, Judy Ann and Ian coordinated and led the social curling league at the Curling Club.

     Ian and Judy Ann provided volunteer audio video services to their St Andrews Church, to the Norfolk Council and to the Curling Club, filming, recording and providing commentary as needed.

     Judy Ann also serves others with her love of music. She has been a member of the church choir for years, volunteered with Simcoe Little Theater, taking Junior members under her wing to provide coaching. She was a member of a band, which, in addition to playing gigs in small venues, also toured around local schools to entertain elementary students. Judy Ann was a piano/vocal teacher, but at Festival time, would provide coaching and accompaniment for NACL clients.

     Individually, Judy Ann is most deserving of this award - with her husband, she is a selfless, model citizen that emulates every good value Rotary stands for.
